Shumway’s engaging paintings on display will include a variety of imagery including landscapes of local scenes and portraits.
Shumway says his painting, Love Letter for deKooning, “honors his gifts to me of understanding process and helping me find my own abstract language. When I first saw his Long Island paintings, I didn’t understand what abstraction was. I had been painting what my eyes were drawn to and learning how to use any medium that intrigued me. His imagery spoke to me. It encouraged me to ask specific questions about the meanings suggested by line, color, texture, mass, dynamics, perspective, the sensual qualities of the applied pigment and how they relate to a subject and content. Most of it was nonverbal, but it was a personal, cultural and universal language just the same. His paintings told me two things: 1. Trust in your new understanding and 2. Find your own voice. That is what I’ve been doing in the 48 years since then. ”
